At the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management of the University of Rijeka, the 28th International Scientific Congress Tourism and Hospitality Industry 2026 \u2013 Trends and Challenges<\/strong> was successfully held from 27 to 29 May 2026. This year\u2019s congress was organized in cooperation with the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, University of Central Florida, one of the world\u2019s leading institutions in the field of hospitality and tourism education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremonial part of the programme, the participants were addressed by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Marko Peri\u0107, PhD, who welcomed those present and emphasized the importance of international scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange in the field of tourism and hospitality. On behalf of the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, Prof. Alan Fyall addressed the attendees, while Prof. Marina La\u0161karin A\u017ei\u0107, PhD, Chair of the Programme Committee, spoke about the programme and the scientific framework of the congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome addresses were also delivered by Igor Radi\u0107, Adviser to the Minister from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport; Robert Mati\u0107, Deputy Prefect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; and Prof. Irena Vodopija-Krstanovi\u0107, PhD, Vice-Rector for Studies, Students and Quality Assurance at the University of Rijeka. Their addresses further emphasized the importance of connecting the academic community, public institutions and the tourism sector in considering the development of sustainable, innovative and competitive tourism. The ceremonial opening programme was moderated by Vedrana \u010cike\u0161, PhD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the ceremonial opening, the first plenary lecture was delivered by Prof. Sara Dolnicar from the Institute for Business and Economics, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. In her lecture entitled Habit\u2013Effort\u2013Enjoyment Theory and How It Can Be Leveraged to Make the Tourism Industry More Environmentally Sustainable, she spoke about the possibilities of applying scientific insights to encourage more environmentally sustainable behaviour in tourism. As part of the congress, Prof. Sara Dolnicar also held a PhD workshop intended for doctoral students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific programme continued through parallel sessions dedicated to contemporary trends and challenges in tourism and hospitality. A special session entitled Sport Tourism, led by Prof. Craig A. Depken, opened a discussion on current trends and development opportunities in sports tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon part of the programme, the second plenary lecture was delivered by Prof. Nancy G. McGehee from the Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, United States. The lecture, entitled Tourism at a Crossroads: Regeneration as the Path Forward, was dedicated to reflecting on regenerative approaches as a possible direction for the further development of tourism. The evening part of the programme was held at Hotel Kvarner in Opatija.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the final day of the congress, the third plenary lecture was delivered by Prof. Alan Fyall from the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, University of Central Florida, Orlando, United States. In his lecture entitled Destinations and Events: Diversity, Differentiation and Education \u2013 A Changing Landscape for Destination Event Planning, he spoke about events that attract large numbers of participants, with particular emphasis on sporting events in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to thank all participants, lecturers, members of the programme and organizing committees, partners, sponsors, representatives of institutions, the media and students for their participation and contribution to the successful implementation of the congress, as well as for the exchange of scientific and professional insights important for the future of tourism and hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
