Private Housing
Erasmus Student Network Rijeka and your Erasmus buddy can help you find accommodation.
Estimated monthly rent:
- Room (with a landlord): €250–€350
- Flat (apartment): €400–€600
Costs depend on the size, location, and included services (e.g. internet, heating). Rent is usually paid monthly in advance, but some landlords may require a deposit or several months in advance.
The best time to look for accommodation is in August, early September, and February. Late September and October are high-demand periods with limited options.
Health insurance
Health Insurance
All international students must have valid health insurance during their stay in Croatia. It is recommended to obtain insurance in your home country that also covers your stay abroad. Students can use international health insurance from their home country or purchase a policy from a health insurance provider of their choice.
EU citizens, as well as citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, can apply for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their national healthcare institution before travelling to Croatia.
The EHIC is issued free of charge and entitles holders to access medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in another EU/EEA country under the same conditions and at the same cost as people insured in that country. It covers only treatment necessary to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return home.
Important: The EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It does not cover private healthcare or services such as mountain rescue or repatriation. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have both an EHIC and valid private travel insurance.
There are three hospitals in different locations across Rijeka. Additionally, there is a healthcare centre in Opatija that provides basic medical services.
