Volunteering

Volunteering is the voluntary engagement of a person based on goodwill, activism and solidarity. Volunteering can be carried out in various fields that are not exclusively related to one’s profession, and volunteering itself contributes to the volunteer in the form of personal growth, social skills development, and active social participation. The Law on Volunteering (Official Gazette 58/07, 22/13, 84/21) recognizes and defines volunteering as a “voluntary investment of personal time, effort, knowledge and skills for the benefit of another person or for the general well-being without any claim to material benefit.”

What all volunteers have in common are:

  • HONESTNESS the desire to help.
  • SENSITIVITY for the way the organization in which one volunteers operates.
  • RESPONSIBILITY for the task one undertakes.
  • RESPECT for the privacy of the organization and its members.
  • PATIENCE in relation to other members, volunteers, staff.
  • ABILITY to accept an opportunity to help.
  • COOPERATION and willingness to respect individual differences.
  • A volunteer in the Republic of Croatia may request a written certificate of volunteer activity from the volunteer organization. The certificate of volunteer activity must contain the following information: personal information about the volunteer, information about the period of volunteer activity, about training, a brief description of the volunteer activity and other specifics of a particular form of volunteer activity. A volunteer booklet can also serve as a written confirmation, as it provides an opportunity to record all the data required by the Law on Volunteering.
  • According to the Law on Volunteering, the Volunteer Booklet is recognized as one of the tools for recording the volunteer engagement of individuals. Each volunteer can obtain a volunteer booklet from his/her volunteer organizer or from the regional/local volunteer center.
