BIP Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development

Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) are short educational offers combining online activities with an in-person intensive programme of minimum 5 days.

The BIP entitled “Sustainable Tourism and Regional Development” was developed to explore the concepts of sustainability, sustainable tourism, stakeholder and community engagement, and the financing aspect of local and regional development. Through a combination of online learning modules and face-to-face workshops, participants will gain a deeper understanding of these interconnected topics and their impact on individuals, communities and societies worldwide.

Main objectives

The main objectives of this BIP are:

  • to provide students with the opportunity to foster collaboration and teamwork
  • to deepen knowledge and learn about the practical aspect of sustainable tourism
  • to explore the links between urban planning and regional development, both in theory and in practise
  • to learn and promote intercultural understanding between tourists and local and regional communities in order to foster mutual respect
  • to strengthen stakeholder and community engagement to promote sustainable tourism initiatives
  • to strengthen students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Learning outcomes

After passing the BIP programme, the main learning outcomes are:

  • identify the main challenges in promoting intercultural understanding between tourists and local and regional communities
  • demonstrate the importance of sustainable tourism for stakeholder and community engagement
  • define and identify the principles of sustainable tourism for the specific needs of local and regional communities
  • determine the funding opportunities and planning of cities and municipalities in relation to sustainable tourism
