As part of Freshers’ Week at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, first-year students had the opportunity to learn about the career path of our Alumni member Marijana Kalčić, Director of the Kvarner Tourist Board. The presentation was also attended by Assistant Professor Maša Trinajstić, Vice-Dean for Teaching, and Professor Lidija Bagarić, Vice-Dean for Development.
Marijana Kalčić presented her professional journey to the students, from her first steps in a local tourist board to her current position as Director of the Kvarner Tourist Board. She spoke about her own experience as a student, the challenges she encountered during her education and career, and the importance of perseverance, active participation and a commitment to lifelong learning. She also presented the diverse opportunities offered by a career in tourism.
Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of foreign-language skills and gaining practical experience. The Kvarner Tourist Board offered interested students the opportunity to participate in trade fairs and presentations, especially students who speak German, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak or Polish.
“Do not give up at the first obstacle. Make the most of your student years, learn, meet people and be active,” Marijana Kalčić told the students, highlighting the many opportunities tourism offers for developing creativity, independence and professional skills.
Events such as this give students the opportunity, already at the beginning of their studies, to learn about different career options, hear about the experiences of former students and establish their first contacts with representatives of the tourism sector. The aim is to enable students to identify their interests in a timely manner, develop the necessary competences and actively plan their professional path during their studies.
As Professor Lidija Bagarić pointed out, a career does not begin only after graduation; opportunities for its development are created throughout the course of study.
The presentation of our Alumni member’s career once again confirmed the importance of connecting the academic community, Alumni members and the tourism industry, as well as the role of the Faculty in preparing students for a successful entry into the labour market.
