In 2020, the construction of an annex was completed, which is important not only for current and future students, but also for alumni, many of whom are now in leadership positions in business. The annex, with a total gross area of 1 250 m2, is exclusively for students and designed as a three-storey functional space. It is located directly behind the existing Faculty building and is connected to it to form a functional unit. The ground floor of the building is entirely dedicated to the library and reading room as well as to students, while the upper floors contain lecture halls with modern equipment. The new facility is completely free of architectural barriers. Functional and rational, in a unique location by the sea, this facility will not only be intended for regular classes but will also be a place that will enable greater internationalisation, the organisation of scientific conferences and summer schools both Faculty itself and of other constituent units of the University of Rijeka.
In order to measure and manage energy and air quality more accurately, sensors have been installed in the halls that allow for
– the measurement of energy consumption in the halls,
– the monitoring of air quality in the halls and the provision of information when parameters are exceeded,
– the possibility of switching consumers on and off remotely,
– the monitoring of presence in the halls,
– the possibility of detailed reporting (in terms of time, space and type of equipment) and monitoring of consumption via a web interface (on LCD TV and mobile devices).
The long-term goals are to create a “smart” building through significant energy and financial savings and to reduce the carbon footprint generated by Faculty activities.
