The cypress is an evergreen tree, a honey plant that grows up to 35 metres high, forms a pyramidal crown and grows unusually fast. It can be recognised by its spherical cones. It is naturally common in the Mediterranean region, as it tolerates high temperatures and drought well, and lives to be about 400 years old. It was probably planted in the Faculty courtyard for its healing properties.
FUN FACT: Cypress cones are collected, even when they are still unripe and green, for further use. They act on varicose veins and haemorrhoids and improve blood circulation. 1 teaspoon of crushed cypress cones is boiled in a cup of water for 5 minutes and drunk three times a day. The essential oil is obtained by distilling the steam from the twigs and leaves. Dermal is used for vein problems, haemorrhoids and as a lymphonic.
