Lipa (Tilia) is a genus of deciduous trees in the lime family of the same name (Tiliaceae). The trees grow up to 40 metres high and form an even and broad crown, and white, giant and fine-leaved limes grow in our region.
The flowers are used to treat colds and respiratory diseases. They promote the secretion of sweat and urine. It is recommended for the treatment of coughs, various inflammations, fatigue and overstimulation of the nerves, and because of its calming effect, lime is used in folk medicine as a natural means of relaxing the body and mind. Considering the historical role of the Faculty building as a sanatorium and the area of Opatija recognised as a baleneo-aerotherapeutic climate, the linden tree in the courtyard represents the tourist significance of this area.
FUN FACT: Among the Slavic peoples it was customary to hold wedding ceremonies under the tree because it was believed that lightning would not strike the lime tree, and during court hearings, learning and entertainment took place there, so the lime tree became a symbol of the Slavs.
